This is an ongoing collection of documentaries and video essays that I’ve come across on online that I think are worth sharing. I will add more as I remember or watch them.

The Engineer who invented the Mars Rover Suspension…in his garage

20/1/2026 – GearSkeptic

A fantastic documentary that details the personal life and engineering career of Donald Bickler, a key member of the Mars rover missions. The video is made and narrated by Bickler’s son, GearSkeptic. I hadn’t heard of Don before watching this, but I wish that I had.

12/12/2025 – Canonical Ubuntu

Interesting historical video of some aspects of computer interface design by Scott Jenson. I think this one might be a bit niche, but worth a watch if you’re into design.

LISTERS: A Glimpse Into Extreme Birdwatching

20/8/2025 – owen reiser

A theatre quality movie available for free on YouTube. Two brothers embark on a year of birdwatching, living in their van, and travelling around the United States. I really loved watching this, it’s full of interesting people and packed with beautiful cinematography.

Extreme Beachcombing

6/2/2024 – Ryan Pinkard and Christian Klintholm

A short documentary about John Anderson, an American man obsessed with beachcombing. This was an adorable video to watch, I loved seeing the little stories behind all the items he’d found on the beach.

no one knows who created skull trumpet (until now)

23/12/2023 – Jeffiot

An investigation into the origin and dissemination of the skull trumpet gif. This was a great story about a short animation.

HAM – Official Documentary (2022)

14/3/2023 – Grace Wolcott

A short and sweet student documentary on amateur radio operators in Montanna and how they’re trying to keep a hobby alive.
